01 The Dungeon

The infamous big wave surf sport known as 'Dungeons' lies just off shore at the foot of these cliffs. I felt the name befitting the mood that was conveyed by the monochrome image. Dark and scary.

01 The Dungeon (SOOC)

The original Straight Out of Camera image that I captured. Personally I prefer this over the edit despite its 'flatter' appearance. I feel that not everything has to 'pop' to carry a mood. So whilst on a technical basis this image would not score as well in a competition, it moves me emotionally which I prioritise over technical prowess.

02 The Dungeon's Keep

Please see the backstory in the description for Image 03. It would be senseless repeating it as this image was shot on the same day, at the same time but is a different (cooler) interpretation of the scene. Not a cropped version of the same image, the clouds tell that story. The wide angle and taller aspect ration lend grandeur to the scene.

02 The Dungeon's Keep (SOOC)

The original Straight Out of Camera image that I captured. I know it's a little soft and lacks the dynamic range of 'The Dungeons Keep' but I prefer this. If takes me back to film cameras of old and I feel gives an overall softer texture to the image that feels more painterly than photographic.

03 8PM in Summer at Hout Bay

We were headed back to Cape Town central from Muizenberg via Chapmans. We had not planned any stops. That's what makes these moments magical. They were unplanned. Unscripted. I was driving but am ever drawn to great light, scenes and compositions. It was almost 8pm and the sun was low. As we passed the toll booth this scene appeared. Shot on my Fujifilm XT-5 with just the kit lens, I prefer to give my images a filmic feel. This one conveys the warmth of the summer sun on the mountains overlooking Hout Bay.
